Why Do Art Classes Matter?

East Pennsboro Area High School art teacher Lisa Swartz expressed the importance of having art classes because art introduces a different thought process and can be used as a form of self expression. She also discussed how the funding has changed throughout the years. She stated, “We are working with a similar budget to that of ten years ago.” Swartz was also questioned whether or not any art classes were possibly being cut, to which she replied, “Not that I am aware of except for Advanced 2D and 3D” due to the lack of enrollment. She also believes our school could offer more variety of art courses; however, she thinks the students are given a decent variety with the given courses.

Teacher William Firestone, of the Art Department, also expressed why photography classes are important in high school, allowing students to be creative with photographs. He also stated that he is working with a similar budget; however, he has to purchase less expensive supplies and a lower quantity. Firestone also said, “Other local schools tend to offer more advanced photography classes”, while East Penn only offers one photography class.
